The name of the INIT file has been changed from "Remember? Startup" to "Remember? Extension" for System 7 compatibility. YOU MUST MANUALLY REMOVE OLD COPIES OF "Remember? Startup" FROM YOUR System Folder AND Extensions FOLDERS SINCE IT WILL NOT BE REPLACED BY THE NEW VERSION DUE TO THE NAME CHANGE! FAILURE TO REMOVE THE OLD VERSION MAY CAUSE SYSTEM INDIGESTION WHEN YOU REBOOT!
YOU MAY WANT TO TRASH YOUR CURRENT "Remember?’s Settings" FILE AND REBUILD THE SETTINGS FROM SCRATCH TO MAKE SURE IT REFLECTS ALL IMPROVEMENTS IN THE NEW VERSION.
••• NOTE FOR USERS OF "SuitCase™":
At the time of this writing, the current release of SuitCase II is V1.2.11. You should upgrade older versions of SuitCase to avoid unconfirmed, but possible problems with corrupted occasion files (especially under System 7.0)
Files Changed in This Release
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
• Remember? Startup (renamed to "Remember? Extension")
• Remember? DA
• Rem? 2.2.0 ResEdit Templates
• Occasions folder: Holidays, Famous BDays (renamed to "Occasions")
• Remember? Manual (changed to "Remember? Manual Folder")
Bug Fixes
~~~~~~~~
• The name of the INIT has been changed from "Remember? Startup" to "Remember? Extension" to avoid confusion under System 7. (Some folks saw "Startup" and reasonably though incorrectly assumed that it belonged in the "Startup Items" folder.)
• Fixed an incompatibility with "To MultiFinder". The system could bomb if the Pop-up Alert window was present when the "To MultiFinder" dialog window timed out.
• Changes to the Pop-up Alert code should eliminate the occasional "(Mac Error -108)" messages.
• Under some conditions (for example when the Microsoft mail DA is open) the "What's Happening" sub-menu would not appear. This should be fixed.
• Windows larger than the screen are opened such that their "zoom" box is visible. Click in it to resize the window to fit.
• Corrected definitions for Canada Day, George Washington and Martin Luther King in "Holidays" and "Famous BDays".
• The System 7.0 "Stationary" flag was set in the "Holidays" occasion file. It has been turned off.
Changes to Existing Features
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
• The "Remember?’s Settings" file will be created within the "Preferences" folder under System 7.0. Users of previous versions may move the existing file from the System Folder into the Preferences folder.
• "Remember? Manual (MacWrite)" has been replaced by a set of TeachText files in the folder "Remember? Manual folder". A Microsoft Word™ format manual is available on the distribution diskette.
•• The "What's Happening" item is always available. The window will display "No Occasion Files are open." when no files are open, or "Nothing is Happening." when files are open, but there are no occasions in the range (just like good old V1.3.)
•• The «Previous» and «Next» items have been replaced by the key sequences «Command-Left Arrow» (Previous), and «Command-Right Arrow» (Next) in Calendar and What's Happening windows. These same keys now bump the "Starts At:" time in "Edit Occasion" windows by 5 minutes.
•• The items: «Open Occasion File…», «Create Occasion File…», «Browse Occasion File» and «Close Occasion File» have been moved into a new dialog accessed through the item «Occasion Files» (Command-O). This dialog is also the place where you Save the default set of Occasion files used by the entire package.
•• The items "Save File & Window Setup" and "Revert to Saved Setup" have been removed. The default file set is viewed/changed through the new «Occasion Files…» dialog. The new sub-menu item «Save Windows as» allows you to save four different sets of windows:
« Default » same as the old "default" window set. Opened when you choose the DA from the "apple" menu.
« Startup » opened when the DA is run by the startup checks when you turn on your Mac. Include a "What's Happening" window of type "Of Interest" in this set. The "Default" set is used if you have not defined a "Startup" set.
« Alerts » opened when you run the DA from the Pop-up Alert window. The "Default" set is used if you haven't saved an "Alerts" set.
« User » spare set for your own use. These windows will be opened if you hold down the SHIFT key when you pick the DA from the "apple" menu.
The sub-menu item «Revert to Saved» will close the current windows, and open the windows in the choosen set. You can also open sets using the command key shortcuts Command-1 through 4.
A solid diamond mark is placed next to the sub-menu item for the window set you are currently viewing. The diamond will be hollow if you have changed the windows in the set (closed, opened a new, or changes the window type) but haven't saved them with the "Save Windows as" sub-menu.
• What's Happening window titles now reflect the type of range (ie: "Today," "This Week," etc.) They revert back to "What's Happening" if you change the display with the calendar "dog ears" or pop-up month/year menus. The single exception is "Of Interest" windows to remind you that shows only a subset of all possible occasions within the range of dates.
• The What's Happening calendar month/year pop-up menus no longer force the display to the entire month. It will show the current type (This Week, This Month, etc) starting at the first day of the new month.
• The selections in the Preferences…Visuals lists are retained while the DA is open.
• Pop-up menu items (such as in the Edit Occasion window) do not show the pop-up triangle when they are disabled.
• The «Occasion Types…» dialog and some items in the «Preferences…» dialog have been reworded.
• The text form of occasions copied to the scrap (with the Edit menu's Copy and Cut items) now include the occasion type if it isn't "Default," and the "Alert me At" time (following the starting time.)
• The default color for text in the pop-up alert window has been changed from black to white to improve its appearance (you won't see this unless you rebuild the settings file.)
• The code to handle the "hot key" for the pop-up alert window has been improved. It should now work on all keyboards. Also, the display of the hot key in the «Preferences…Alerts» page shows the names for keys such as "enter" and "delete." You can use virtually any command key sequence for the hot key, including the Function keys (Be careful of conflicts with programs like QuickKeys™ 2.1.)
The "hot key" pop-up window will appear when the key is RELEASED rather then when it is pressed as a result of changes to improve compatibility.
Note that the actual operation of the hot key is now disabled while the Alerts page is being changed.
• The "Edit Occasion" window colors will revert to the standard system set (white background) if you have chosen a "dark" window background color in the «Preferences…Visuals» page.
• NewLine characters (carriage returns) imbedded in text Pasted into the description box of "Edit Occasion" windows are converted to spaces. A future version will allow CRs in the description.
• The Apple Notification Manager is used to unblank the screen before displaying a pop-up alert window. It works great with Pyro 4.0, and should work for recent versions of all screen blankers.
New Features
~~~~~~~~~~~
••• Installation is Easier!
• Changes have been made to simplify first-time installation of the package. The following actions are taken the first time you run the DA if there is no existing "Remember?’s Settings" file: all Occasion files contained anywhere within the System Folder are opened and saved as the default set, a dialog giving tips on setting up is displayed, a "What's Happening" window of type "Of Interest" is opened, a "Default" window set will be saved when you exit the DA if you have not already saved one.
••• A new "Of Interest" check replaces the old Startup checks!
• The method used to check for "significant" occasions at Startup has been changed. Each occasion type now defines the number of days of advance notification for occasions of that type. For example, this allows you to select 14 days notice for Birthdays to have enough time to pick out a gift, and 0 days notice for Alerts so that they only nag you on the day that they occur. At Startup (or Restart) "Remember? Extension" checks the default occasion files for any occasion for which "today" is in the advance notification period, and will run the DA/play a sound if it finds one. The "What's Happening" windows saved in the default window set are completely ignored by the startup checks.
• The "Occasion Types…" dialog lets you change the advance notification for individual Types through two new fields. "“Of Interest” Advance Notification" selects the notification for this type. The available choices are: "None" to completely ignore occasions of this Type at Startup, "Standard" to use a default number of days (initially set to 7 days,) and a "Days…" sub-menu to select a specific number of days notice for occasions of this type. The "Standard Notification" field at the bottom of the dialog lets you change the default "Standard" period to anything from 0 to 31 days.
Initially, all of the Types will be set to either "None" or "Standard". Change the "Standard Notification" period to the number of days warning you would like for the majority of the Occasion Types. You can then change selected Types from "Standard" to something from the "Days…" sub-menu for those with a special notification period.
• The Pop-Up Alert window menu (accessed by clicking on the little ICON) has an additional item. "Anything of Interest?" (Command-Option-I by default) will run the DA and repeat the Startup check for occasions Of Interest. If there is nothing of interest the DA closes itself immediately, otherwise it opens the same windows as when it is automatically run at Startup.
This is an interim manual solution for those folks who leave their Macs on for days at a time. Once a day you should press the Pop-up Alert hot key (Command-Option-` unless you have changed it) to show the Alert Window, then press Command-Option-I to check for occasions of interest. This process will be performed automatically in a future version, as soon as I can come up with a method which will never interfere with the current application.
• The DA's What's Happening sub-menu has an additional item "Of Interest" (Command-I.) It will open a window which shows only the occasions "of interest" for Today (ie: within their notification period.) Command Left/Right arrow keys and the calendar "dog ears" will bump the date by a single day rather than the entire range displayed, since you can move into or out of an occasion's notification range.
••• Direct Entry of Occasion Definitions!
(This feature is only available under System 6.0.3 or later.)
• Edit Occasion windows have a new pop-up menu item "Text » Occasion" (Command =). This item will convert the text you have typed in the description box into an occasion definition, filling in the fields of the window with the results. It will beep and display a message in the problem area if it cannot understand the occasion definition you have entered.
The definition should be a list of some of the following: month name (January…December); day of week name (Monday,…Sunday); the occurrence of a day of the week (first…last, alternate); the name of an occasion Type (Birthday, Meeting, etc.); a day of the month (1…31); a year (1956…2018, or 56…99); a short date (7/4/91, 8/1); starting and alert times (3:30, 10pm, 22:00uhr, etc.); the special dates "Today", "Tomorrow" and "Yesterday"; the description of the occasion in quotes ("Billy's birthday", “Joe’s neutering party”.) Note that the first Time you enter will be used as the Starts At time, the second specifies the Alert Me At time. If you enter a time only (eg: 10pm) it will replace the current time but leave the other fields unchanged. The description may also follow the other items without quotes if you separate them with a TAB character (Copy/Paste use this format.)
Upper/lower case doesn't matter and you can abbreviate any of the names (jan = January, tod = Today, meet = Meeting, etc.) Be careful to include enough to insure that you get the item you expect. Commas and other punctuation are ignored as are a few filler words such as "at" and "on." Here are a few examples:
July 4 "Independence Day"
May 10, 1956 “somebody's birthday”
alternate tuesday 7/9/91 'Trash collection day.'
meeting 3pm 2:30pm tomorrow "Billy's social problems. (alert at 2:30pm)"
birth feb 19 "Kimberlee's birthday."
• You can now "Paste" text occasion definitions into Edit Occasion and Browse Occasion File windows. Edit Occasion windows will only accept one definition, but Browse windows accept as many as you like. Each definition should be on a separate line. You can use this ability as a poor person's Import/Export function (See the TeachText manual file "Part 3, The Desk Accessory.")
• You can quickly enter an entire occasion using only the keyboard:
1. Press the alert hot key (Command-Option-`) to bring up the alert window.
2. Press Command-Option-N to open the DA for a new occasion.
3. Type the occasion definition into the description box.
4. Press Command = (equals) to convert the text to an occasion.
5. Press Command-N to save a new occasion
6. Press Command-W or Command-Q to close the window and quit the DA.
KNOWN PROBLEMS
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
• Under System 7.0, selecting "Restart" or "Shutdown" while the DA has more than one open window will close only the front window and wait for you to manually Quit from the DA. I am working on a fix for this.
• Pop-up Alerts may not be properly updated when occasions with an alert time are added/changed in files that are shared in a network. Basically, the alert code doesn't know that the files have been changed by someone else and may miss a new occasion that occurs before the current one. The alert is guaranteed to be correct when you do any of the following: turn on or Restart the Mac, open then close the DA, choose "Revise Alert" from the Pop-up Alert window menu. This will probably be fixed as soon as I can find a way to determine which files reside on remote systems.
• Microsoft Word™ can look a little strange if you are typing text near the pop-up alert window when it floats on top of the document window. Also, for some reason Word sometimes does not display the first few keystrokes after a pop-up alert appears. They are entered correctly in the document, but don't appear until you type a few more keys. This one may never get fixed since I can't figure out what Word is doing.
• Pop-up alert windows can be overwritten when they appear on top of some game or paint program windows. Also, SuperBoomerang™ can draw a single black line through parts of the pop-up alert when you are working with "Open" or "New" file dialogs. Nothing is broken, it just looks a little funny.
• "Big Foot" can leave footprints on the pop-up alert window. Not sure I want to fix this one since it looks kind of neat (It is fixed occasionally when Big Foot walks on the "right" part of the alert window.)
COMING ATTRACTIONS (A FEW HIGHLIGHTS)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
• A "To Do" feature is still in the works. I had some problems with the method I was intending to use and had to postpone it till the next release. It will probably be implemented as a "Persistent" option on Occasion Types which causes occasions of that type to continue to appear after their initial date until you make them go away. It is probable that this feature will not work on network shared occasion files, is this a serious problem?
• Changes to pop-up alerts to allow more than 24 hours advance warning, and the ability to see occasions with no specific time in the pop-up alert window (this will take a while since it requires fairly extensive changes to the alert handler.)
• Ability to automatically execute a "macro key" from an alert occasion.
